The biggest difference you'll notice when hitting a one-handed backhand is that you're making contact with the ball further in front of your body than when you're hitting a forehand. The reason? Your hitting shoulder is further forward since your body is rotated with this shoulder closest to the net. By starting your swing earlier, you can compensate for the ball not being as deep into the court.
